OPUS - full album vinyl session on youtube

Sun 28 Jan

A couple of weeks ago I set up a date with myself, my turntable and OPUS and listened through the whole album while filming the seance. This became a 1h 26min long actionpacked filmic masterpiece and can be watch in its full length here:

Now all our albums can be streamed from there, as well as from all other streaming platforms. The revenue from this is practically non-existing, so if you would like to support our work and buy the albums in physical or digital form, you can do this at https://afenginn.bandcamp.com/

A look back on 2017

Sat 6 Jan

2017 is a remarkable year to look back on for us. We have been on the road with the wonderful OPUS lineup and this is a spectacle of mostly 9-10 people have played a a good bunch of Scandinavian capitals: World Village Festival in Helsinki, Stockholm Kulturfestival in Stockholm, Oslo World Music Festival in Oslo and several shows in Denmark where Roskilde Festival and Tønder Festival stand out as the big highlights of the year. At these two we had the honour to have the choir Vokalselskabet GLAS with us on stage, and at our concert at Roskilde Festival we were a total of 23 people, adding a string section, extra brass and moog to the lineup. I am so grateful for all these experiences and a bit amazed that it actually could work out to tour such a big circus around Scandinavia.

We will be a bit less on the road in 2018 - but fear not! There are shows lined up in Denmark, Germany and Spain at the moment and more dates will be confirmed as we move further into the year. May the year be wonderful for all of us!

Review in Fatea Magazine is now available:
"Did you ever consider that you might be missing out on a classical, folk, jazz, North African crossover double album, with lyrics in an invented language based on Latin? Me neither. But I was.... It's a hoot! More than that, it's terrific!"

Mon 6 Mar

It is with great disappointment that we have to announce that our Australian tour now in March 2017 is cancelled due to visa complications. In January 2015 I was injured during a tour in Australia and was not allowed to fly out of Tasmania where we were at the time of the incident, because of the health risk of flying in that condition. This lasted for 6 weeks and when I finally got on the plane and left the land of OZ, I had accidentally overstayed my working visa. This problem was addressed and taken care of as soon as possible and we all thought that everything was good and back to normal, but it turns out that this is not the case.

After lots of considerations back and forth, we finally decided to cancel the tour. Our biggest apologies to the festivals and venues where Afenginn was booked to play, and to fans and friends that had been planning to hear us playing. And not least to Cathy from Nomadic Fish who has worked a lot for this to happen! We are working on solving the issue and to be back…hopefully before too long.

OPUS picked as album of the year

Tue 20 Dec
OPUS has been selected as "Album of the year" from The Progressive Aspect's Jez Rowden:

Jez’s Album of the Year: Afenginn – OPUS

"A fantastic acoustic creation that draws from folk, classical and world music, the cinematic scope of OPUS unfolds with the music, sometimes in widescreen but often with a starkly emotional and claustrophobic inwardness that demands your full attention. A piece of art that completely succeeds in achieving what it set out to do."

Thank you for the huge honour!

There's so many people around us that has been helping and supporting us and we hereby send a huge thank-you-hug everybody involved. All the musicians both on the album and live, Jonas for sound, Viktor for light, bookers, venues and festivals and everybody listening and keep showing up to the concerts and supporting our albums. THANK YOU!!

OPUSTOUR in DK, FO and AU this autumn

Tue 6 Sep
This autumn we're kicking off the OPUStour with shows in Denmark, Faroe Islands and Austria and we're looking extremely much forward to present the new music live. The music has been growing and evolving since we recorded it - kind of a snapshot from where and what it was at that particular time about a full year ago now. Since then we've played it live and been rehearsing with the OPUStour lineup to find an expression that it wants live. Some forms are extended, some dynamics are different, some voicings have been changed and so on.

The musical backbone of this tour will be the music from OPUS together with a some tunes from some of the other albums, that we haven't played in a long time. So in many ways it's very exciting to get on the road and present all this music for you. These are the venues:

22.9 - Klaverfabrikken, Hillerød (TICKETS)
23.9 - Kulturstationen Vanløse (TICKETS)
24.9 - von Hatten, Randers
30.9 - Bygningen, Vejle (TICKETS)
6.10 - Halkær Kro, Nibe (TICKETS)
4.11 - Torshavn, Færøerne
5.11 - Fuglafjordur, Færøerne
9.11 - Wien, Austria (TICKETS)
11.11 - Bruunske Pakhus, Fredericia (TICKETS)
12.11 - Badeanstalten, Slagelse (TICKETS)

OPUS gets amazing reviews!

Fri 20 May
The reviews from OPUS are starting to roll in and the album has been very well received so far. We've got a bunch of them translated into english and here's a few exctracts:

GLITTERHOUSE (DE): "...That music like this can be so enjoyable, in spite of the fact that you could consider it – at least partially – as “difficult” and enormously elaborate, is quite a gift! Big recommendation!"

MUSIK AN SICH (DE): "...they have created a little matchless masterpiece
...Opus isn’t just ambitious, it is also a new peak in Afenginn’s musical development.
...long-lasting enjoyment, an exciting record even at the 10th listen..."
(19/20 points)

SOUND AND IMAGE (DE): "...The wealth of expression ranges from quiet moments to anthemic eruptions, all arranged in good style and played in an almost graphic way. Simply fantastic!"

OPUS disc 2, complete airplay in German radio

Tue 10 May
The German radio station "Radio Dreyeckland" featured OPUS in their program "Keine Heimat" last week and played the whole disc 2. That's all of 3rd and 4th movement/part, about 40 minutes of new Afenginn music. Uplifting to learn that they take the time to dig deeper and present bigger chunks. Thanks a lot!

The program is still available for a few hours when I'm writing this. Check this LINK

Drama in Dresden

Sun 1 May
We had a more exciting day than totally necessery in Dresden the other day. Some 20km before arriving in the beautiful city, the gearbox in our van broke down and could only be driven in 1st and 3rd gear. Not that convenient. So there we came rolling into the parking at the impressive Dreikönigkirche in 1st gear. Luckily it is a Volkswagen van and after a few calls with sweaty palms explaining the problem in automobil german we managed to find a VW mechanic that could take it in late Friday night. The van was dragged away while we were playing and next morning we got a call that it was ready and good to go again. German effeciancy top klasse!

Six shows down, four to go

Sat 30 Apr

We’ve been on the road for a little more than a week now, with six shows behind us and four to come. It’s been truly adventurous to work on the new music day after day, find new aspects and develop it as an organism. In a way it always feels like the music is truly revealing itself after it has been recorded and thoroughly been worked through and put down on a album. It’s first when we start playing the material live that we can actually for real start figuring out the different nuances and emotions that live within the music, and what the music wants to express. And that’s where we are now, in the beginning of that journey. Very rewarding and great fun!

The next shows are:

2. May - Roter Salon, Berlin
3. May - Kukuun, Hamburg
4. May - Sendesaal, Bremen
5. May - Neue Schmiede, Bielefeld

Ready to hit the road with new music!

Mon 18 Apr
In a few days we're hitting the road again! It's been a while and I'm personally looking very much forward to go on tour again. Many things are new on this tour:
First of all we'll be playing A LOT of new music from our upcoming release OPUS. We've been working on translating the album to a live version and rehearsing like good scoutsboys and it'll be great fun to play it all live. Tomorrow we're having a production rehearsal and will hopefully get the last things sorted.

Apart from the music, we're going with a slightly new line-up as well.
- On the drums we'll have Knut Finsrud, one of the two drummers on OPUS. He's been touring with us before, so he's not new in that sense. An amazing drummer!
- On the double bass you'll meet Nils Bo Davidsen, as a stand in for Erik who recently had a little baby. Nils plays a lot with Knut in the Simon Toldam Trio, a fantastic band - check them out! He's been on tour with us a couple of years ago also and it's good to have these two as a solid base.
- On clarinet we'll have Kristoffer Nybye, the youngest in the group and some kind of prodigy - there's hope for the world!
Alexander Kraglund will be playing the violin and viola. We've been playing together in other bands, but not in Afenginn and it's such a great pleasure to experience his talent and focus in this constellation.
- The marimba will feel the love from Kaare Munkholm. Kaare has been playing all our Choirnevale shows and was in the core of the recording of OPUS and is real a treasure to have on the team.
Roma Komar will be taking care of making the sound as pleasant as possible to listen to and
I'll be playing the mandolin and mandola. Hooray hooray! Hope to see you out there // Kim

Pre-orders out to the world

Fri 25 Mar
The fresh OPUS CDs have arrived from the factory and the first batch of the pre-orders are sent out, hopefully in time for Easter...at least the more local orders. There has been interest for our new release from different places in the world, and so far we've sent out to Denmark, Finland, Russia, Netherlands and Japan.

It feels so good to finally get the music out, hope that it will be well received!

Pre-order OPUS at: www.afenginn.bandcamp.com/album/opus

Short attention span video teaser

Fri 18 Mar

For those all of us accustomed with a momentarily contemporary attention span, we've made a short (< 2min) teaser for OPUS. Since it is about a musical album, it works best with sound turned on

OPUS will be released digitally on April 8th and physically on double-CD and double-LP on April 29th.
You can pre-order it at: www.afenginn.bandcamp.com/album/opus

luna televisio, levi satellit // loco tempesto, Laura inherit // Leo inhibit, lava expedit // luna televisio terror implicit
luna televisio, data satellit // pornormalus Elvis sodomit // Ella inhibit, Eva expedit // luna televisio, tauno subterrit

luna pandivisio, inanimus teknit // nix orbus actio, binus unit // unus fallifist, nulli hola trist // luna televisio, plaga ben satis

Working on a new album

Thu 10 Mar
New album in the making!

The last couple of months we have been working on new music for our forthcoming sixth album.
We've had a couple of weeks in the amazing Studio 3 in the old national radiohouse in Copenhagen (nowadays the music conservatory) and the basic tracks are in the box.

It's a big chunk and still need quite a lot of work, but getting there. Prepare for lots of new Afenginn music in the start of 2016!
